Join us for a summer film screening for Palestine at K19 on 4 August.
As Israeli aggression continues to expand across the region, Palestine, and Gaza in particular, remains under daily threat. As the violence continues and attention shifts elsewhere, we invite you to spend an evening centred on Palestinian cinema, conversation and solidarity.
At a moment when catastrophes are increasingly instrumentalised to fuel Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism, we will be screening one of the classics of Palestinian cinema, Divine Intervention (Yadon ilaheyya) by Elia Suleiman, on 4 August at 19:00. We invite Suleiman’s absurdist yet humorous work as a meditation on finding light, humour and beauty amidst the most horrific of circumstances.
Throughout the evening, we will be serving Watermelon Spritz – available with or without alcohol – in exchange for donations. All proceeds will go to @3ezwa.de , a Palestinian legal fund supporting people facing legal persecution and repression in Germany.
About the film:
Set between Nazareth, Jerusalem and Ramallah, Divine Intervention follows a Palestinian man navigating family life, love and the realities of occupation. Through absurdist humour, quiet observation and moments of surreal fantasy, Elia Suleiman crafts a poignant and darkly comic portrait of everyday life under Israeli occupation.
Elia Suleiman (b. 1960, Nazareth) is a Palestinian filmmaker, actor and screenwriter whose work blends deadpan humour, surrealism and political commentary to explore everyday life under occupation. He is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary Palestinian cinema.
