🎞️Please join us on March 29th at 7 pm at AGIT for a screening of R21 aka Restoring Solidarity by Mohanad Yaqubi (2022), presented by the Yosomono Time Brigade, as part of the archive&research operation 中Naka Internationalist Liberation Archive (NILA).
R21 aka Restoring Solidarity is a militant imperfect archive, a letter, and a praxis of care against erasure — an experimental meta-film made by Yaqubi after longtime Japanese activists from the Palestine solidarity movement entrusted him with a cache of twenty 16mm films (the Tokyo Reels) they had received between the late 1960s to early 1980s and preserved for decades in Tokyo since. Drawing on newsreels, militant documentaries, experimental works, and dubbed films made (by filmmakers from Palestine, Japan, and elsewhere) in Palestine and Lebanon between the 1960s and 1980s, R21 is a cinematic gesture of connection across distance, time, and struggles that sheds light on the overlooked anti-imperialist solidarity between activists in Japan / Okinawa / Ainu Mosir and the people of Palestine.
Through meticulous restoration and reframing, it resurrects lost visual histories, offering a poignant reflection on a shared struggle against imperialism, on political commitment, memory, and resistance, on how images travel, how solidarity is translated, and how memories of liberation movements survive in dispersed, fragile archives to reconnect with current struggles.
Free entrance · donations for the Palestine Film Institute and for friends in Gaza are welcome and encouraged.
The event space itself is wheelchair accessible (ground floor) but the bathroom is not.
